When hemp (asa) was introduced to Japan it quickly took on ritual and spiritual uses. Priests used ceremonial sticks, called gohei, which had hemp fibres tied to one end. These were used to drive evil spirits from people and create a state of purity.
Hemp also played a symbolic part in Japanese marriage, used both to represent the commitment and obedience of the wife and to joint the couple in happiness and laughter.
